James Riggall has been part of the HITLab Australia team since 2007. During that time, he has worked in technical, research and teaching roles. James now does less technical work and is primarily focusing on teaching and research.

James currently works as a senior tutor, helping to develop and deliver our internationally supported courses. James primarily works with international lecturers such as Tom Furness and Bruce Wolcott, ensuring that our students have a local contact point at UTAS and someone to assist them with the practical side of their studies (something that is not ideally suited to video-conference).

James works at the intersection between technology and the humanities, focusing his research efforts that allow him to explore this territory. His research interests include philosophy of technology, video game design theory, social media, virtual worlds in education and interactive storytelling.

James is currently working on a research project with Dr. Linn Miller from the School of Philosophy and a professional game development team. This project aims to use the Unity game development engine to create a compelling virtual world for teaching Philosophical concepts to first year Philosophy students. This research is supported by a UTAS teaching development grant, which James and Linn were awarded at the beginning of 2012.

James has also recently spent some time working with HITLab student Shannon Woolley who has created a virtual replica of the old Longford Racing Track. James has provided his technical expertise to get this simulation working in the VisionSpace. This simulation now gives users the sense of driving around the Longford Racing Track as it was in 1967, with the imagery filling the user's peripheral vision and the road stretching out in front of them in stereo 3D. More information about this project can be found on the project page.
