Director: HIT Lab AU (December 1, 2008)

Applications are invited for appointment to this position, which will be offered for a fixed-term basis of five years, with the possibility of renewal. The closing date for applications is 1 December 2008.

The HIT Lab Australia (HIT Lab AU) is being established by the University of Tasmania within the School of Computing and Information Systems as a specialist human interface technology teaching and research centre. It is partnered by the world-renowned HIT Lab US (http://www.hitl.washington.edu) based at the University of Washington in Seattle and has links with the HIT Lab NZ (http://www.hitlabnz.org) based at the University of Canterbury.

The Director will provide strategic and operational leadership of the HIT Lab AU including oversight of the development of its undergraduate and post-graduate courses and research higher degree training programs; cross-disciplinary collaboration in research activities with other UTAS schools and faculties; the development of research and consulting activities including commercial projects with business and industry; and the establishment of national and international partnerships with the HIT Labs US and NZ, Virtual Worlds Consortium, and other relevant organisations.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD and have sufficient academic experience and credentials within the fields of human interface technology to qualify for the rank of Professor or Associate Professor at the University of Tasmania. He or she will have substantial experience in industry and/or commercial environments and with leading-edge developments and applications in human interface technology.

The development and partnership-building plans for the HIT Lab AU require a Director with proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with academic and research colleagues across discipline boundaries; to develop collaborative research programs, activities and projects; and demonstrated entrepreneurial ability to establish close connections with business, industry and other commercial partner. As the academic leader of the HIT Lab AU the Director must demonstrate the capacity to develop, oversee and contribute to the delivery of teaching/training and assessment of curriculum for undergraduate, post-graduate and research higher degree courses and programs. He or she will also be able to attract external research, consulting and project funds and manage research and commercial projects to successful outcomes.

This senior appointment will be at Academic Level D/E and an attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant. Women are encouraged to apply as the University is seeking to increase the number of women in senior academic and administrative positions.

Lecturer B/Post Doctoral Fellow: HIT Lab AU (December 1, 2008)

The HIT Lab Australia (HIT Lab AU) has been established by the University of Tasmania within the School of Computing and Information Systems as a specialist human interface technology teaching and research centre. The Lecturer/Post Doctoral Fellow will contribute to teaching and curriculum development in undergraduate and postgraduate courses; undertake research and consulting activities relevant to the strategic plans of the HIT Lab AU; and supervise postgraduate research candidates.

The successful applicant will have relevant research higher degree qualifications and post-doctoral experience in research and teaching in human interface technologies. Specific tasks will include responsibility for teaching designated HIT Lab AU undergraduate and postgraduate coursework units, the development of teaching resources, and teaching as required within the School of Computing and Information Systems.

As a HIT Lab AU course team member he or she will contribute to the review and development of undergraduate and post-graduate curricula and related teaching and learning developments and activities within the HIT Lab AU, and supervise honours and research higher degree candidates and postgraduate research projects. Other critical requirements are the ability to collaborative with academic colleagues and administrative support staff in the HIT Lab AU, the School of Computing and Information Systems and in other schools and partner organizations, and the capacity to prepare grant applications, undertake research and consulting activities, and participate in commercial projects relevant to HIT Lab AU strategic plans.
